I think the whole crowd was crying for Roczen. It’s a remarkable story for the German Wunderkid to finally get it done. Like we said in our Most Impressive article: it’s destiny fulfilled. So much raw emotion watching him secure this championship. To think of everything that he and his family has been through leading up to this moment… is it one of sports greatest stories?! It surely is one of the greatest stories in our sport’s history.
Could you have scripted a better start to that 450 Main?! With all on the line, the two title favorites clutch out 1st and 2nd in the start. It truly was a picture-perfect moment with Roczen and Lawrence rounding the first turn in the front of the pack. What a treat to all us fans to be able to watch. In fact, Sexton even mentioned it was a treat for him to watch once he rounded the first turn and realized the two title guys were battling in the lead; he said it was like a movie!
I was shaking in the press box… heart rate over 100 BPM (yes I measured with my Apple Watch). Soooo much nerves and anxiety watching that 450 main unfold. We talked to some German reporters and fans after the race and they mentioned how it was the longest 20 minutes of their life… I can only imagine how Roczen and Lawrence must have felt. It’s a truly rare-moment to be in a winner-take-all scenario for one of the most prestigious titles in motorsports. I think the whole crowd there and fans watching at home felt that. Even 250 riders watching after their own race admitted how anxious they were (we questioned Kitchen about that in the post-race media scrum and he mentioned he was super anxious and had tears in his eyes for Kenny). A collectively stress-inducing event!
Someone beats Deegan! Davies prevailed over Deegan in what was Deegan’s final 250 race. It’s a poetic moment… passing of the torch to his younger teammate. A truly incredible race between the two of them in what seemed playful and fun. Davies dominated his division already in just his second year pro… we might be in for a boring couple years with him dominating in supercross.
The stadium was aroar for the entire night. It was a symphony of cheers as Davies rounded the course after beating Deegan, but that was one-upped during the 450 main when the ENTIRE crowd was yelling for Kenny for the full duration. The crowd stayed well into the night to celebrate. What a moment. What a time to be there to witness history.
Sure, perhaps it doesn’t have the allure that Vegas does for the series finale, but SLC has its own charm. It’s a small venue with a beautiful backdrop of mountains. We truly enjoy going there every year. Next year you gotta get out!
