Two weeks in a row Hunter gets crowned as the Most Impressive in the 450 class, and he truly deserves it. Last weekend he got the holeshot and ran a strong pace the entire main event. This week he passed the points leader (Eli Tomac) and almost caught up to Chase Sexton out front. Wow.
We’ve seen Hunter run this pace outdoors and compete with the best (namely his brother), but never before have we seen this in Supercross. What does it mean? I think he’s for real, and we gotta stop being impressed with him. The goal moving forward is not just to win, but surely to win the championship right? He alluded to this when we chatted with him during media day on Friday. He’s a real championship contender now.
It was a chaotic race; this is how Hunter summed it up:
“[I was] just trying to move forward. I was behind Chase and Jason, and I knew the first 10 minutes of these races is always such just a super intense, high pace. So, just trying to stay in the hunt. I know I have the legs to go the distance, so just trying to give myself the best shot to stay in it in the beginning and just move forward, honestly. It was pretty cool. I hear the crowd when me and Eli were go ing back and forth and it was cool. And then when he went on the inside and then in the whoops, I sucked my belly into trying to get up the left hand side. And then we both ended up going after the finish line into that outside. It's been some really good racing, honestly. And I could only imagine from a fan standpoint of view, it's been fun”
Mosiman has been steadily improving in the past couple of years since joining the Star Yamaha team (after seemingly peaking on the TLD team earlier in his career). Well, I think it’s safe to say that the second peak of his career is officially here: Mosiman looked excellent leading the field for the first half of that Main Event on Saturday, and if it wasn’t for Deegan, Mosiman would have walked away with a win (it would have been first since in 4 years [since San Diego Jan. 22nd, 2022]).
Mosiman looked comfortable on the track all day, a stark difference compared to the opening rounds with a few crashes. However, he shined the most after getting the holeshot in the main event and set 4 of the fastest laps in the first half of the race. Ultimately, Deegan did catch him and pull away, but we saw what we needed to see: an invigorated Mosiman that not only could run the pace but looked comfortable doing so; very impressive. The next question is, can he beat his team mate Haiden Deegan?
Mosiman talked about his career-rebound in the post-race media scrum:
“[I’m] just trying to keep getting steady finishes. I'm not trying to do anything crazy. I'm just riding my laps and it feels awesome to be able to go really far down and to reinvent myself. It's been a lot of work and a lot of belief. To just give you an example, so I get injured 2023 and was going to miss a certain amount of races. My pay got cut to zero and they told me: we're not resigning you for next year. So, now I'm injured, I have surgery, I don't have pay. We were like, "Well, we don't have a ride here." And so, one night we just realized there's nothing keeping us here anymore. So, we immediately went to Florida. My wife got a job to try to make things come together. And through surgery, through everything, not even knowing if I would race again professionally, I missed like three days of training. I just never quit training and working towards somaething and I had no clue what it would be. And so, now it's coming full circle; to be established in this championship three rounds in, three solid finishes, no big issues in any main events; it has been awesome.”
Scott's Opinion: Hunter is for real in Supercross; impressive to see him contending for wins. As for Mosiman, watching his career rebound over the past year has been inspiring. He looked great running up front!
