For a moment there, it looked like things could get interesting. Stewart was pressuring Webb, and with Justin Cooper coming, maybe Webb would end up 4th? But nope… J-Coop never had any intention of passing Webb, and Stewart couldn’t get the job done. Now Webb has a very comfortable points lead heading into SLC… it’ll take super bad luck for him not to win this title.
I think it’s just the time of year, but I was surprised not to see any of the 450 guys pull a triple into the long rhythm… I think it could have setup a fast line and would have been advantageous. Unfortunately at this point of the series it’s not worth it for most riders... the only guys racing for points/money are Webb vs. Sexton and J-Coop vs. Stewart… and out of those guys, if no one pulls it off, there’s not an incentive for anyone else to jump it. In other words, their all happy not doing it.
It’s something small, but seeing Webb purposely flinch during the heat race whilst lined up next to Sexton was great. When asked about it in the post-race press conference (kudos to whoever asked) Webb mentioned that he knows Sexton has a tendency to jump the gate and wanted to test it out. Obviously it didn’t work and Webb didn’t try it again during the main (despite lining up next to Sexton once again), but it’s classic Cooper Webb to play mind games like that.
Deegan will do Deegan. He was aggressive with his teammate Davies in qualifying, and was of course aggressive with him again in the Main Event. But he got the championship… big milestone for him! I wonder what his relationship with Davies will be like moving forward… my guess: not good.
It has been a while, but we finally experienced another hard-packed track! With that, we saw Sexton shine, Craig be a bit better, Beaumer comfortable once again, and whoops that held up. Personally, I like these hard-packed tracks. The racing is more consistent and there’s less emphasis on just surviving.
