What We Noticed: Foxborough

Here’s What We Noticed in Foxborough:

  1. Mud

Yep… it was awful. In my opinion this was the worst Supercross mud race in recent years. We asked McElrath about it afterwards, and he mentioned it was about the same as SF but different conditions; it wasn’t raining as hard which made the mud super sticky and deep and less sloppy.

  2. Chaos

This goes hand in hand with the mud, but it’s worth its own callout: it was chaos everywhere. Everywhere you looked was a downed rider, a bike stuck in the mud, or smoke. At some points it was so smoky / steamy you could barely see the track. On the last lap, Sexton got stuck behind a pile of smoke so thick that he just stopped riding cause he couldn’t see… insane. In the SMX Next race, so many riders were down in one section that I thought it impossible for the leaders to get through… luckily they proved me wrong.

  3. 250 Points Fight

With Hammaker and Hampshire down in the first turn, and Vialle in 4th with just a couple laps remaining, it looked like Vialle was going to capitalize and extend his points lead. However, he crashed, got stuck, and barely finished, dropping back to 22nd. Now, there’s a tie for the lead between Hammaker and Vialle and Hampshire is just 3 back... it’s an exciting points battle!

  4. Webb Gonna Webb

He did it again… classic Webb. Rain, sun, mud, dry… doesn’t matter, Webb’s gonna charge to the end and likely make up some ground and/or positions towards the end of the race. His last couple laps were insanely impressive; no one in front was able to match his pace and he quickly caught up and passed Sexton. It has big implications for the points battle in 450s; Sexton was poised to grab some points back but instead Webb extends it. Classic.

  5. Open Stadiums

As I’m writing this I’m sitting in Philly with clouds and a forecast of rain all weekend… not great considering we have another open air stadium. The northeast at this time of year is super unpredictable in-terms of weather, and we have 4 races in a row here that very well could be rainy or at least super soft. Be prepared!
