McElrath is an underrated mud rider! He did super well last year in SF (4th), and now in Foxborough gets his career-best finish with a 2nd. I noted it earlier in the day: McElrath does quite well in the mud, and sure enough, he proved me right! He was even able to keep Plessinger somewhat honest for the first few laps.
McElrath’s program is also getting better. To start the year, he wasn’t even sure if he was gonna be able to race all the rounds. Luckily, the team figured out their funding, and McElrath has continued to improve. The next step? Top 5 in dry conditions!
Here’s what he had to say about his night:
“We’re back up here again. This week was a really good week mentally… and tonight was all about opportunity. I was on the line and I was praying, ‘God, just give me traction.’ That’s all I want on the grate, and I got a good start, leaned back, and started shifting. I almost lost it in the first corner… I want to keep this progression going… This is the first time in the 450 class where my whole program has been in unison, and that’s what I’m really excited about, so we’ll keep at it.”
Simply: wow. Linville crashed in the first turn with Hampshire and Hammaker, but yet easily gapped them and passed basically the entire field to get 4th. It was an insane ride! The crazier part is that he had no idea what place he was in. He mentioned in the post-race press conference that he was hoping for a top 10 when he crossed the finish line; it would have been a career-best. Little did he know: not only was it a career-best with a top 10, it was a podium! Unreal. Huge kudos to him and the team.
He was “speechless” after the race:
“I’m pretty speechless right now. I don’t even have words. As a kid you always dream for this moment and for it to come true is just unreal. I’m just really speechless right now.”
