What We Noticed: Seattle Here’s What We Noticed in Seattle:

  1. Webb Rebounds

We already honored Webb with Most Impressive, so let’s skip how great his ride was. The thing We Noticed is Webb’s ability to rebound after a bad week in Birmingham. He said it himself: he felt that people were starting to count him out after just 1 race; it’s crazy the short-term memory that we have in this sport. Momentum and confidence shifts from week to week, with the most recent race being heavily weighted. Coming into Seattle, Sexton had all the momentum right? Not so fast, Webb proved that he’s going to be tough to beat in this title. Now the momentum is back in Webb’s favor.

  2. Satisfied Sexton

Sexton is a racer that is very open about his emotions. After a race that he “maybe” should have won, I expected him to be visibly upset and frustrated with the result. Instead, Sexton appeared relatively satisfied with his ride. I think this is great: there’s lot of racing left and Sexton is still in a good position to win the title. The Seattle track was tough, Sexton rode great to catch the leaders and pass for the lead, and was just a couple small mistakes away from the win. Sexton handled the 2nd with maturity, realism, and poise.

  3. 250 Drama

The 250W title might be getting “boring” points-wise, but the drama continues to satisfy! We have a prison jumpsuit for Deegan, and beef between him and Beaumer (maybe Shimoda too?). Personally, I don’t mind any of it. Deegan is letting the riding do part of the talking, and the talking he does off the track is entertaining. He’s embracing his Danger Boy!

  4. Bad Round for Jordon Smith

It was awful…. he must have been wondering why even bother racing. He crashed at least once every single time he was on the track (except fortunately for the LCQ). Multiple crashes in qualifying, multiple crashes in the main: not good for a guy that is recovering from broken ribs and other internal injuries. Luckily he was wearing the new Alpinestars “airbag” chest protector… it deployed multiple times. Kudos to Smith for pushing through it all and somehow salvaging a 12th.

  5. Soft Tracks

At first it seemed the track was pretty hard-pack and dry (relatively speaking for Seattle conditions), but as the sun set and the mains came around, it softened up a bit and got nasty. Riders mentioned the ruts were super tricky cause the soil was somewhat packed-in making the ruts harder and less forgiving compared to the super soft ruts last year. Brace yourselves for more soft conditions… we have open-air stadiums for the rest of the year!

  6. Mission Mafia

Shoutout to Kyle Springman for coining (or at least mentioning) the term “Mission Mafia” in reference to the three Canadians racing from Mission, BC: Julien Benek, Tyler Gibbs, and Blake Davies. I grew up in the Fraser Valley, so it’s cool seeing these local guys come out and race some supercross. Seattle is a hometown race for them and the BC moto community, so the locals had some Canadians to cheer on!

Thanks for reading! We’re flying cross-continent over to New England for the next round.
