The Monster Energy Cup kicked off earlier today in sunny Las Vegas, NV, at Sam Boyd Stadium. Qualifying is now done.

The race itself has a unique three 10 lap main event format for the night show, which in turn means that all of the qualifying happens during the day. The top 18 fastest riders from qualifying practice sessions advance to the main, and the final 4 spots are given to the top 4 finishers in an LCQ race.

Here are the qualifying results:

My opinion:

Go Deano! Last year he was sitting on the couch watching this race without a ride, now he’s heading into the night with pole position. It’s hard not to cheer for this guy after all he has been through; what a difference a year makes! Dean looks SUPER comfortable on this track tonight, flowing and moving on the bike like he used to. Nice to see the old Deano back.

The track looks uber hard-packed, slick, and dry. However, apparently it’s pretty good for what riders have come to expect from Vegas’ conditions.

Here are my picks for the podium tonight:

  1. Eli Tomac
  2. Marvin Musquin
  3. Jason Anderson

Eli looks comfortable, and a comfortable Eli is really hard to beat. It just seems like he can pick it up another notch when he needs to, and I’m guessing that tonight will be a good one for him. The only possible thing that could hurt him is bad starts with the short 10 lap races… we will see.
