Round 5 of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship occurs today at Muddy Creek raceway in Tennessee. The qualifying practice sessions just finished.

Concerns throughout the week were that tropical storm Cindy would cause a mass downpour of rain on race day. However, the storm is moving at a slower pace than thought, and we’re in for a good and somewhat dry day of racing at Muddy Creek. There was some rain last night, which made the track pretty slick this morning for practice, but it should be good to go when race time rolls around.

The track crew prepared for lots of rain, and hence didn’t till up the track as done normally. As a result, the track is harder-packed than the norm, which makes it quite a bit smoother; ruts and bumps have a harder time developing! Jeremy Martin pointed out that it reminds him of “his amateur days” due to how smooth the track is. Regardless, the track crew has brought out the tills after practice, so it will get softer and rougher as the day progresses.

Here are the qualifying results:

450:

My Opinion: Sigh of relief in terms of weather. While a mudder can be exciting, these tropical storm predictions were looking absolutely awful. So yeah, I’m glad! The track actually looks great, and I think it will shape-up perfectly as the sun comes out and crew tills it up a bit.

There has been some boastful comments from Blake Baggett recently. He’s definitely trying to play mind games over his competition, but today it was Eli Tomac playing mind games with Baggett: Tomac took the fastest lap time in that last session on the last lap, beating Baggett’s previously set time. Tomac’s mind games are done with his riding on the track. I’m liking what I’m seeing from Tomac recently. Despite a few crashes and set backs so far this season, he’s remaining relatively calm and sits pretty close in points.

Too bad for Musquin dealing with his meniscus injury… but all things considering, he’s riding pretty well. The slick conditions earlier tested his knee, but he was able to come out with a top 10 time. Get through today, and he’ll be able to return to normal next round I think.

Here are my podium prediction:

250:

  1. Zach Osborne
  2. Jeremy Martin
  3. Aaron Plessinger

450:

  1. Eli Tomac
  2. Blake Baggett
  3. Jason Anderson
