Round 3 of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship occurs today at Thunder Valley in Colorado. Practice just finished, with both points leaders (Zach Osborne and Marvin Musquin) taking the fastest lap times.

One of the main things to watch at Thunder Valley will be the deep ruts that form on this track, as well as the physical challenges that come from higher altitude. Luckily it’s not too hot today though, so it should be perfect weather for racing.

The series is also leaving California for the first time in the season. That’s significant because basically all riders have put in many laps at the two previous track (Hangtown and Glen Helen) throughout the year. It’s close to where they all train, and doesn’t require much travel. Hence, you could say it’s pretty even across the field because all riders feel super comfortable at these tracks. However, leaving California is when the top riders really start to shine. These tracks are more foreign to a lot of these riders, so the most prepared and skilled riders will rise to the top at these tracks.

Another thing to note is that current 250 points leader Zach Osborne has been suffering from an illness all week. He got his fastest lap in the first session, and then said that he took it easy in the second session to preserve his energy. That’ll be something to keep an eye on throughout the day, especially with the high altitude already being a challenge physically.

Here are the qualifying results:

My Opinion: Musquin looks REALLY confident folks! I haven’t seen Musquin ride this well in probably forever. Needless to say, I think Musquin is at the best point of his career so far. You can tell just watching him ride that he’s FEELING IT. I like seeing this Marvin, and I think he might take the win today! One thing that I really liked seeing too is that he spent the last lap of practice throwing massive whips. Not only does that show confidence, but it also shows that he’s having fun! Which is super important.

Also, I really hope that Pro Circuit has their bike issues figured out. Thunder Valley is hard enough on bikes as it is… plus Savatgy, Cianciarulo, and Forkner all looked really good in practice.

Here are my picks for top 3 today:

  1. Adam Cianciarulo
  2. Jeremy Martin
  3. Zach Osborne

  1. Marvin Musquin
  2. Eli Tomac
  3. Jason Anderson
